I just wanted to share something from my Son.

I had received a text message while out running errands that read…

Can I please have 50$ of my report card money, the total is 105 but I only need 50 currently.

Mommmm plz

?

I responded back with a, 👍 (thumbs-up emoticon). I was out and about and don’t like to text while driving.

After I got home from my errands, he and I had a conversation regarding, what he wanted the money for. He told me it was for some type of upgrade for his Minecraft game. He knows how I feel about wasting (I think it is a waste) on things like this. It should be used on things that you hold and use physically. Later,  I received this email…

                     Why People Like Things
Recently I asked you if I could get a game “upgrade” as you say it, and you said it’s a waste of money if you’re not going to use it frequently for example I’m using this upgrade for Minecraft. I like playing games, I like playing sports, and this is for a reason as this study shows. By Ted O’Callahan A piece of chocolate is among life’s simple, certain pleasures. The cocoa smell, the velvety feel as it melts on your tongue, and the taste—sweet and bitter—that stays in the mouth, all combine to create a heady experience. But what about the experience of carefully selecting and anticipating a favorite brand—peeling back gold foil wrapping, feeling the shape of the bar in your fingers. How much is that part of why you enjoy your favorite chocolate? Yale psychologist Paul Bloom argues that it’s easy to miss the complexity that underlies pleasure. His work looks at the subtleties of everyday behaviors like distinguishing art from everything else, the intuitive sense of fairness that children display, and the feeling of pleasure. That last topic resulted in a book, How Pleasure Works, in which Bloom shows how the most obvious factors—a catchy melody or mouthwatering smells—don’t explain pleasure fully. “Pleasure is affected by deeper factors, including what the person thinks about the true essence of what he or she is getting pleasure from,” he notes in the book. You see mom and dad, I have a reason for liking these things physiologically. I have fun with these things I buy with games, I know Mom that you wouldn’t understand why I like to do these things but I’ll do an example of why you like to do something. For example, you like to go hiking or buy makeup. Life is your game and you like to buy these “upgrades” such as makeup. You buy makeup because it makes you feel good, well mom and dad buying these “upgrades” for these games make me feel good, and so it is not a waste because it makes us feel good that makes it not a waste of money since we all use “upgrades”.

I must say, this child-of-mine, always has an amazing argument. That we have taught him well. Thoughtful, smart, witty, and well thought through. I love him with every breath I take.

At 13, he talks about becoming an Attorney or a Radiologist. Owning his own practice. When we were in the pediatricians office the other day, he looked at me and said, “This isn’t what my medical office is going to look like.” What a cool conversation that was. All of the equipment he would have, the technology, the decor. He has his head in the right direction. I can’t wait to see what he becomes. I know it will be great. 🙂

What is my definition of success?

On to Day 2 of The Self Love Revolution series.

At the end of the video they asked… “What is your NEW definition of success where you can always win? OR, in times of binge eating, what are you really hungry for and what can you do to remedy that?”

Isabel Duke spoke a lot about binge eating.  I don’t have a problem there.  Thank goodness!  I do think that a have a problem with completing tasks for myself and not being a goal finisher with my own personal self.  Being that said, I’ve been trying to work on this.

What this consists of for me is… getting out the door for a walk, finishing tasks on my to-do list, cleaning the house, complaining that something doesn’t get done, but not doing it myself, doing the laundry, making appointments for myself, setting aside time for myself to blog, to paint, learn something new.  Stuff along those lines.

I like to think that I am already tackling this.  25 pounds down the past year. Setting up dates to hike with a friend. Taking ‘ukulele lessons once a week. Keeping my room cleaned up. Keeping my children on task with their chores. Crossing things off my to-do list in a more timely fashion.

What am I going to do to keep going? One foot in front of the other. Just do it, don’t wait. Don’t wait until later. Don’t push “snooze” when my to-do, or reminder, pops up on my phone. Get out the door. Pick-up the phone. Turn on the vacuum. Carry that laundry downstairs and get it going. Good stuff like that.

The big thing for me is though, to keep it up.  To keep doing these actions and moving forward each and every day.

I also wanted to talk about what I decided to do about Day 1. Day 1 was about me setting up 2 new daily “Rituals” for myself. Have I done that yet? Um, I don’t think so. Not in the way that I understood that I am supposed to. To set one up in the morning and then another in the evening.

The thing is, I think I already have established a pretty good routine of rituals for myself lately. In the morning, after I get the kids to school, I make myself a nice breakfast and I sit and just relax for a while and enjoy my breakfast. Be that on my computer cleaning out my e-mails. Checking on Facebook. Reading a news article on-line. Doing bills. No matter what it may be, it’s me time. After that, I move on to what I have in mind next.

In the evenings I have been plopping my fanny on the couch to get in some relaxation time.  Watching a show that I have on the DVR. If I’m not doing that, I have been getting my family to play a board game with me.  I also read in bed, or watch a show that I have on the DVR in my bedroom.

This is all acceptable to me. I think that I definitely find time for myself.

Some things that I would like to see change are… getting out for more walks and spending time with my Husband, and setting up more family time. Three things that I really miss.  🙂

Another Day in the Enchanted Forest

Yesterday I set out on another hike at the Land of Medicine Buddha and into the Enchanted Forest. This time with my good friend, Jen.

image

It was an absolutely gorgeous morning. How could it not be though, with the amazing place we call home.

image

We took a shorter route than I did the last week.  This one about a mile and a half. After that loop, we walked the Eight Versus Trail to get a little extra land in.  We finished at about 3 miles.  3 glorious miles though.

image

It was the first time that I went to the temple and saw this amazing statue.  It was huge. I am assuming about 25 feet tall.  All indoors.

image

I didn’t go in, but will next time. Maybe bring a token of my gratification for whomever created this beautiful place for me to enjoy.

image

Even though I am not religious, I find that looking at these little beautiful scenes that I find all over this property, brings me a calm. I’ll welcome that any time.

image

While visiting one of the little shrines in the Enchanted Forest, I found a rock that was placed for Madyson Middleton. I was hoping I would see one. That made me smile. HOWEL FOR MADDY!!

image

At one point of the short round about, we walked down hill.  Steep down the hill.  My knees don’t usually like that, but I am feeling pretty great today, so I’ll probably to it again if I want a shorter hike day.

image

I love looking around and noticing all of the changes going on for Autumn. The color of the leaves, the ferns in full force, the wildflowers dyeing off.

image

I can’t wait to go back! 🙂

7 Things I Love About My Husband

1… He’s super funny and makes me laugh and smile.IMG_5515

2… He cleans up my puke.  Seriously.  Laugh if you must, but this is huge. We laugh about it, you can too.

3… His ass. Perfect.

4… His drive in everything that he does.  It’s inspiring and a turn-on.

5… His strength. If he ever had to carry me miles to safety, he would. He would probably be crying after a minute, or two, because I am too heavy, but he is super strong and he would do it no matter what.

6… He is so damn smart! He’s my Renaissance Man. I totally dig that about him.

7… He’s an amazing Father.  Just ask my Boys, they’ll tell you the same. No hesitation.

🙂

A Sweet Sunday

Today was a good day.  It stated out with watching a couple of episodes of Orange is the New Black in bed. Relaxing and easing into the day.

About 9:30 I rolled out of bed, washed my face, brushed my teeth, moisturized, brushed my hair, then threw on some clothes. Down the stairs I went. Had an apple and gathered my things to head out with my family to the beach.

Sunday is the rest of my families day to hang out with the guys and the kids.  They’ve done soccer, ultimate frisbee and now they are on to beach volleyball. It’s a joy to watch them all gather, join teams and play for fun.  All of the laughter and smiles on their faces makes me so happy inside.  I truly enjoy watching them on Sundays.

image

After a bit of watching the guys, my friend, Laura, and I walked over to Armida’s tasting room for a little wine tasting. It’s always a treat, both the wine and the wonderful company.

image

After some wine tasting and great conversation, I made my short trek back home.  I had some wonder food to prepare.

image

Today I made Falafel’s, Garlic Hummus, Basil Pesto and Mint Garlic Pesto. All from scratch. Everything turned out beautiful.  Super yummy too.

We had the Falafel’s and some of the hummus for dinner. I’ll use both of the pesto’s this week with my meals. Yum! 🙂

I baked a batch and also friend a batch.  I wanted to be able to compare them.

By the way… the hummus came out kick-ass! Maybe I should rename it, Kathleen’s Kick-Ass Garlic Hummus? Ha! 🙂

Hiking For Your Health, Well and Maybe Your Sanity Too. ;)

IMG_6506

I met up with a friend this morning and set out for a hike that I have been wanting to check out.  We drove to the Land of Medicine Buddha.  Parked the car and immediately started enjoying the beauty and chatting all along the way.

IMG_6504

We walked through the beginning of the Eight Versus trail and then veered off to the Enchanted Forest. Oh what an amazing forest it is.

IMG_6505

It smelled so good.  The leaves glistening.  The rain on my face and arms felt to good.  Everything so peaceful and serene. I could have walked all day.

IMG_6511

Julie and I just talked and walked.  Serious and laughing. This time was long over due, but also right on time. It was great for both of to just get out and be.

IMG_6512 I can’t wait to hit this trail many more times over. I know it will be even more delightful each and every time.  🙂

Tonights Beauty

I set out with my family this evening to try and catch the beautiful Eclipse and Red Moon, but the marine layer had something else in mind. We waited, but were still not able to see the moon.

While waiting I walked down to the shore and was able to capture a few beautiful photos of the sun setting. Unfortunately, something has gone haywire with the setting in my Camera, so I opted to take a few with my iPhone. I’m just happy they came out as well as they did.

I hope you enjoy.

After I got home my Niece sent me a quick text and told me that she could see the moon out a bit now. I headed out to the balcony. I’m so happy that I was able to catch the tail end of the eclipse. It is so beautiful. Again, unfortunately, I had to capture a few with me iPhone. I suppose it’s better than nothing.

Here are a couple that I was able to capture.

Sunday, Monday, Tuesday.

Sunday…

I woke up feeling great! I cleaned myself up and headed out the door. I was on a mission to see some friends that are such beautiful souls.

My friend Dele was doing the Surf City AIDS Ride. Esplanade Park, in the Capitola Village, close to where I live, was the first stop on their map.

I loved cheering on the riders and they came in. Then here came Dele and her friend, Richard. Woo hoo!!! Right on riders!IMG_6068
IMG_6060

Can you believe that she was doing 65 miles that day?! Isn’t that just amazing!  She has done the AIDS Ride several times as well.  I am just so proud of what she does for others.  Constantly!  She is always an inspiration to me.

As for Kristofer, he will be doing the AIDS ride for his first time coming up.  I am so proud of his will and the endeavors he pursues.  Another true inspiration! For sure!

What a wonderful way to start my day.  Also, to set the tone for the rest of my week. 🙂

Monday…

After dropping the kiddos at school I came home, made myself a little breakfast, then took off for a walk. Headphones on, hit play on the podcast and off I went.

I never get bored walking around my home.  So many beautiful things to look at.  So many different paths to take.  Every single one of the breathtaking.

My walks each day have been making me feel so very good. Good for the mind. Good for my soul. Good for my mood. Good for my body. Just so many ways to list.

Here are a few pics from this wonderful town that I call home.  Enjoy!  🙂

Tuesday…

What an amazing day this was.  A field trip with the 5th graders!  Woo hoo!

We met with a Guide, by the name of Todd. I believe that he is a Survival Trainer.  Anyway, he was fantastic.  On point. Patient with the kids and super informative.  I would love to take my family back for a day, or even a weekend and just have him teach us.  Great stuff!

IMG_6105We saw Banana Slugs, raccoon tracks at the creeks edge, learned how to walk like a fox and be aware of our surroundings.  We were shown what we need to make fire and how to do it.  We made shelters with what was available in our surroundings.

         IMG_6126

I could just imagine what else we could have learned in a smaller group.  I was very impressed.  It made me really think about booking some really quality time with my family.  Away from the house.  Away from electricity and the distractions that it brings. Back to family, talking, stories, bonding.  I miss that so much.  xoxo

All in all, I must say that my mornings have been amazing.  It usually works out that if my morning stays calm, then the rest of my days does as well.  Kind of setting the day, if you will.  I love my life when it falls into place this way.  This month has been a very hard one for me.  A new chapter in the book of learning for sure! As for today, I couldn’t be happier. 🙂

Walking to calm the soul.

IMG_5877

I woke up so happy early this morning, ran downstairs with a plan in mind, then my morning took a nose-dive. I went back upstairs, changed into my walking clothes, then went down with a much needed intention that I needed to get out and walk for two hours.  Just put my headphones on, turn on a podcast and breathe.

I finally got out the door over an hour later. Taking care of my family and important deeds. I walked out the door. I walked for about 35 minutes.  Enjoying this beautiful day. Thinking positive thoughts. Enjoying this amazing town that I live in. Walked to the end of the wharf admiring the tourists take photos. The locals fishing. The fisherman packing fish. Just enjoying the business of those around me. All while still breathing slow and deep.

I must IMG_5879also say, that when I put on Rose Caraway’s, Kiss Me Quick’s Podcast, I am able to clear my mind a bit and force myself to focus on the stories. I am so thankful.

I know I mentioned yesterday, that this has been a trying month for me. A month VERY out of the norm of my preferred mood.  I am just happy that I am instilling things that will help me move forward and out of my current space.

I also must add that it is my Father’s 80th Birthday today. How amazing is that!

When I got home from my walk, we put the candles on the glorious Key Lime Pie that I both from him at Gayle’s before my walk. He asked for pie this year instead of cake.

I have to say, that I am amazed by my Father. He dances every Friday night.  He is so active and vivacious. I just hope that I can grow-up to be as healthy as he is. It is just so wonderful and a blessing.

My Father has lived with us for 15 1/2 years now. A third parent to my children. They don’t know life without him. He adores them and they adore him. It is a beautiful relationship they have. That is what makes my soul happy today.   🙂
